Driver fined more than £1000 for failing to let police by on A12

A van driver has been fined and given points on his licence for failing to let police by in an emergency.

The driver failed to move over for two miles on the Northbound A12 between Kelvedon and Marks Tey on May 17, 2010.

He was given a fine of £1, 130 and five points at Harwich Magistrates' Court on January 20, 2011.

Cally Beale of the A12 road patrol team said: “Failing to move over to let police or other emergency vehicles past is a serious matter.

"Someone’s life could well be at stake. Nearly all drivers are very helpful, but in the very rare cases where they are not, we will take firm action.

"Often we are on our way to an accident or breakdown which is blocking the road, so it is in every driver’s interest to let our 'blue lights' team through.

"Not seeing us for that length of time is no excuse, you should be aware of very obvious blue flashing lights and sirens!”
