Detectives close investigation into sexual assault

Detectives investigating an allegation of sexual assault in Colchester have closed their investigation.

A woman claimed she was pushed into bushes and sexually assaulted in Berechurch Road on March 10, 2011, but officers are assuring residents it did not occur.

The woman is currently receiving treatment from mental health teams.

Det Insp Steve Jennings said: "The woman made an allegation that a man pulled her into bushes and assaulted her and I can assure local people that this did not occur. We have checked CCTV and made very thorough enquiries in the local area.

"Stranger rape or sex assaults are very rare in Essex but we do want women to take sensible precautions if they are out late at night or coming home after an evening out. It is always preferable that women travel home with a companion or use public transport or registered taxis.

"I want to assure local people, especially woman, that Essex Police takes sexual assault offences extremely seriously. We have specially trained officers and a sexual abuse referral centre where victims can receive medical help and support from specialists outside the police service."
