Walls and fences

The type of fencing, hedging or walls around a property can attract or deter thieves.

Check for weak spots where a thief could get into your garden, for example, a low sagging fence or a back gate with a weak lock.

A thorny hedge around your home can put thieves off but make sure passers-by can still see the front of your home so a burglar can’t work unnoticed.

Think about laying gravel in your garden and driveway - burglars don’t like it because it’s noisy to walk on.

Do not use barded or razor wire - you could be held legally responsible for any injuries caused.

The use of broken glass is now illegal and any fence or wall topping that may cause injury and is installed under 8ft in height must have clear warning signs displayed nearby and at regular intervals along the boundary.
